7 Sheikh Zayed Road changes to ease traffic jams

  DUBAI – Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s main highway, has undergone seven improvements to help ease traffic jams, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Here are the seven changes, according to Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA.

1. Travel from SZR to Umm Suqueim in less than 2 minutes

It is now possible to travel from Sheikh Zayed Road to Umm Suqeim in 1 minute and 45 seconds instead of 12 minutes, thanks to the widening of Exit 39 near Mall of Emirates. The exit has expanded from one lane to two, doubling the road capacity from 1,800 vehicles per hour to 3,600. This also reduced the 1km queue to 50 metres.

2. New lanes added to speed up flow of traffic

A new lane has been added near the Shangri-La Hotel and first interchange on Sheikh Zayed Road to increase the capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour. A third lane was added at the exit in the direction of The Dubai Mall, which increased the capacity to 5,400 vehicles per hour.

3. New lane added near first interchange

A new lane was added near the first interchange of the Sheikh Zayed Road in the direction of Sharja to increase the capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour and cut the waiting time at the entrance of the service road. More improvements were also made to entry and exit points.

4. Exit-entry points on fourth interchange expanded

Entry and exit points on thefourth interchange in the direction of Sharjah (Al Manara Exit) were expanded to increase the capacity from 10,800 vehicles per hour to 12,600. Works also included the addition of one lane near the exit to the service road, after the Noor Bank Metro Station, in the direction of the exit to Umm Al Shief.

5. Bottleneck towards Safa Park eased

Improvements have been made to the Umm Amara Street towards Safa Park Interchange to ease the bottleneck at the roundabout and increase the flow of traffic in the direction of Abu Dhabi.

6. Traffic flow eased on Trade Centre Roundabout

The free right lane branching out from 2nd December Street to Sheikh Zayed Road has also been changed to increase the storage lane capacity and boost traffic flow on the Trade Centre roundabout

7. Congestion on Al Barsha service road eased

Al Thowima Street at Al Barsha, near Novotel Hotel, also saw several road improvements to ease congestion on the service road and improve access to internal areas of Sheikh Zayed Road. ICA/Expat Media
