Dubai court dismisses tycoon’s $115 million claim on superyacht case

DUBAI – Russian tycoon Farkhad Akhmedov lost his claim for $115 million in damages against his ex-wife after it was dismissed by Dubai’s top court. Akhmedov had claimed for lost charter income after the superyacht Luna was impounded in Dubai as part of his costly divorce battle with Tatiana Akhmedova. Tatiana had won a UK court order to seize his assets as divorce settlement, claiming she has not been paid a cent out of the 40 percent of his $1.4 billion fortune that the court ordered. The superyacht was impounded in Dubai more than two years ago amid the ongoing legal case between the couple. The superyacht remains moored in Port Rashid. Farkhad initially filed a case against his ex-wife in January 2020 to recover damages, saying that the superyacht could have been rented instead of being detained. The claim ran contrary to previous claims that the vessel was not a commercial yacht, therefore could not be chartered out. The Dubai Court of Cassation ruled there are no grounds for further claims for alleged damages. The court also ruled that Farkhad pay expenses and costs to his ex-wife. ICA/Expat Media
