Dubai Police goes viral as man accuses OFWs from UAE of 'cyberbullying'

  Dubai Police went viral in the Philippines after a man accused Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from the UAE of cyberbullying when they participated in a VinCentiment short film film by saying, "Lenlen Loser". The controversy surrounding the social media film comes amid a busy campaign period in the hotly contested Philippine elections. Filipinos have been split in their presidential bets, with surveys pointing to Bongbong Marcos and Leni Robredo as among the strongest contenders in the polls. "Hi Dubai Police HQ. I wonder if you have laws against cyberbullying? Attached here are Filipinos in Dubai who are maligning the reputation of our current Vice President Leni Robredo. Hopefully, actions will be taken. Thank you," a Twitter user posted. The official Dubai Police Twitter account then replied, "Thank you for contacting Dubai Police please send all details on this email: ps-ci@dubaipolice.gov.ae". Screenshots of the tweet have also reached other social media platforms such as Facebook and people are calling OFWs out, saying they’re participating in “negative campaigning”. The VinCentiments short film, The Exorcism of Lenlen Rose, shows the participation of OFWs from Chicago, Barcelona, Dubai, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, France, and Australia, saying "Lenlen Loser" with an "L" hand sign on their foreheads. The film has been seen as a negative campaign against presidential aspirant Leni Robredo. “Hindi kailanman magugustushan ng OFW ang nagbigay sa kanila ng kahihiyan matapos nyang siraan ang sariling bayan (OFWs will never like someone who shamed them after discrediting their own homeland),” the caption of the video says, referring to Lenlen, a puppet doll. The Exorcism of Len-len Rose is trending on Facebook with over 1.7 million views, 135,000 reactions, and over 29,00o shares. "Pambihira totoo lahat and mga script na isinama sa mapaglarong isip magaling na director (It's extraordinary how the script from this director's playful mind is all true)," a Filipino netizen posted. While some of the netizens were happy with the film, there were others who criticized it. "No to negative campaigning so what is this hashtag #LenLenLoser?" a netizen tweeted after #LenLenLoser trended on social media. Meanwhile, there is yet no update on whether a police case has officially been filed against Filipinos in the UAE who were flagged for alleged cyberbullying. The UAE has very strict anti-cyberbullying laws that protect its residents. Violators are fined a minimum of Dh150,000 to a maximum of Dh500,000 and sentenced to six months to two years in prison under the UAE federal decree law. JMS/Expat Media
