Dubai-based internet star La Ghie drops out of Expat Duets

  DUBAI – YouTube sensation and Filipina singer Virginia Sanchez, known as La Ghie to fans in the Middle East, has dropped out of Expat Duets. Sanchez was one of the early favourites in the local singing competition. She and singing partner Erick John Dizon, the first Dubai representative of popular Philippine singing contest Talentadong Pinoy, competed against eight other pairs in the musical showdown of the UAE’s most talented Filipino singers. “I am due to exit the UAE to change my visa status and I am still not decided on whether I want to come back to reside and work in Dubai or in Qatar where my fiancé is based. We are planning to marry and are currently ironing out the paperwork,” Sanchez, who is engaged to a Lebanese national, told ExpatMedia.Net. Expat Duets, the first of its kind singing showdown in the UAE, requires all contenders to be present in a six-week musical battle that culminates on March 10. Sanchez rose to fame in 2003 after a video of her singing Albanian song Moj E Bukura (Beautiful Remix) became viral on YouTube and was a hit in Macedonia, Kosovo and in particular, Albania, where she became very popular almost overnight. She then produced two sold out concerts in Dubai. Her entry to Expat Duets was her first after a long break from singing. She said that her self-imposed break allowed to "realize that I wanted something other than fame”, adding that she is now happier spending more time in church activities. Sanchez admitted, however, that she was sad to leave the competition, a move which automatically disqualifies Dizon. The duo was the last to audition for the Expat Media-produced event in January, but qualified after wowing judges with a beautiful performance of singer and songwriter Ogie Alcasid’s Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang. 76 Dizon had planned to take Dubai-based singer Leo Manalac as his new singing partner, and had requested the producer to allow him to compete with Manalac in the fold, however, contest rules could not allow him to do so. Meanwhile, when asked who she thinks is likely to surge ahead of the group in the weekly musical challenges, Sanchez said it was hard to predict but that a certain duo impressed her with the “perfect combination of their vocal range, even from the start of the competition”. Sanchez said that the contestants may even feel intimidated by Philippine Idol 2006 winner Mau Marcelo, who is also competing in Expat Duets, but said that they should “just believe in themselves”. “Just enjoy yourself on stage and let your natural talent take over. You only need to compete with yourself,” she advised.
