Dubai’s new way to treat Covid-19 patients: How it works

  DUBAI – The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is adopting a new treatment method for critical cases of Covid-19 in the emirate. This week, the DHA will start treating Covid-19 patients using blood plasma from those who have recovered from the new coronavirus. The process is called convalescent plasma therapy, which is being introduced at DHA hospitals and private hospitals in Dubai this week. It is an important step towards the treatment and prevention of the spread of Covid-19, said Dr. Younis Kazim, CEO of Dubai Healthcare Corporation at DHA. Dr. Kazim said that the DHA took this step after international test results found that those who recovered from the virus develop antibodies that can be used to fight the same virus. Doctors believe that plasma from patients who have recovered from Covid-19 contain antibodies. When the plasma is injected into a Covid-19 patient, the antibodies will attack the coronavirus. Dr. Kazim said that US Food and Drug Administration revealed it is scientifically proven that the use of convalescent plasma therapy has helped speed up the recovery of Covid-19 patients. He added that specialists from DHA have outlined a protocol that specifies who can make plasma donations and who is eligible to receive this treatment.
