Breaking gender stereotypes: Emirati female endurance rider has a message to everyone

It takes a lot of courage to venture into a male-dominated field but women in the society persevere despite societal pressure, one of them is one of the UAE’s first female professional endurance riders, Fatima Alharthi. The Emirati equestrian, inspired by her uncle, took up the sport at the age of 16 and, has made a name for herself in the shifting sands of the UAE. She admits that being it wasn't easy for her as a woman to venture into a sport dominated by men, but she remained true to her passion and sets out goals of achievement for herself in the arena. Her parents were very supportive of her decision and it encouraged her to pursue it, "They were the first to motivate me and encourage me to do it because my uncle used to be a horse rider," she said. She admitted failing a couple of times, even falling from her horse, but she continues to uplift herself and that led her to become the woman she is today. "I always accept challenges," she says with a smile. Endurance riders are known for their strict training schedule, exceptional skill, and a blinders-on approach to a sport that often doesn’t give one much leeway for a breather. The ability to connect with the horse poses great importance. Recognized for her boldness, perseverance, and determination, it's no surprise that she is part of anon’s ‘Trailblazer’ women. “It is a very great honor to be part of Canon’s trailblazers. This means so much to me as an Emirati horse rider and I hope I inspire other women as much as I can and motivate them to be what they want to be.”, she says. Despite the unguaranteed wins every time, she remains optimistic all throughout her journey and makes sure that she doesn't come out of a race without learning something, She believes that she will achieve the things she's envisioned, “This is what makes me stronger.
