Filipino family in Abu Dhabi beats Covid-19 'torture'

  DUBAI – A Filipino nurse who got infected with coronavirus along with her family in Abu Dhabi has recovered after a two-month ordeal, according to a report on Tuesday (June 16). Mary Kim, her six-year-old daughter and her parents went through “torture” after they contracted the virus in March, she told Gulf News. The nurse, who was the first in her family to get infected, said Covid-19 is “debilitating” but that the hardest part was being treated in isolation. The Filipina, who works at Burjeel Hospital, began feeling symptoms of coronavirus when she reported for work; she felt cold and had body ache and fatigue. She was asked to stay home and get tested. The test results soon confirmed she was positive for coronavirus. She isolated herself in a room but within days her 49-year-old mother began showing symptoms. Her 54-year-old father was also rushed to the emergency ward after developing symptoms. Then her daughter fell ill a week later. The four family members were soon hospitalized at different facilities, another blow to the tight-knit family. It was Mary Kim's father who developed serious effects of Covid-19, and he was transferred to the intensive care unit when he couldn’t breathe properly. Thankfully, his condition improved in five days. The family was able to stay connected through WhatsApp and Zoom, which Mary Kim said helped uplift their spirits. They have since been discharged from hospital and earlier this month received their second negative test. “I am so thankful that we have this second lease on life,” Mary Kim said.
