Filipinos flock to reopened The Market in Dubai

  DUBAI – “Buhay na naman dito! (It’s lively here again)” a Filipino expatriate told Expatmedia.net at the reopening of The Market in Dubai’s Al Muraqqabat area this week. The outdoor market reopened to visitors starting on December 14 (Monday), 22 days after it was shut down by the Dubai Municipality for “endangering public safety”, as Expatmedia.net first reported. Watch the moment The Market reopened: On Tuesday night (December 15), a lively crowd of Filipinos was seen enjoying the open-air dining area where several restaurants have set up their stalls and food trucks. A server at Sa Nayon, which serves puto bumbong, a Filipino rice cake, told Expatmedia.net that orders have started picking up. She hopes they can beat their biggest sale of 400 servings of puto bumbong in one night. Stalls selling garments and other items also saw an increase in footfall on the second day of the reopening.

2 outdoor markets remain closed

Two other outdoor markets along Al Muraqqabat road that were also closed in November have remained cordoned off, with one of the markets completely demolished. Sources told Expatmedia.net that the remaining The Market near New Era Supermarket will continue to open throughout the Dubai Shopping Festival, which starts from December 17 and runs until January 30.
