Heart device the size of a dirham now available in UAE
DUBAI – A tiny pacemaker that is as small as a dirham is now available in the UAE, with four patients receiving the device since November. The wireless device is 93 percent smaller that a traditional pacemaker, and has been implanted for the first time in patients at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. A pacemaker monitors the heartbeat, and if an abnormality is detected, the device then sends electrical pulses to the heart to make it beat. Dr. Khalid Al Muti, head of cardiac electrophysiology at the hospital, hopes that more patients will benefit from the new pacemaker. Surgery and recovery are quick, and patients are discharge within a day after the surgery. Al Muti said the device has a 10-year battery life and can be monitored remotely without any pocket, wires or maintenance.
