Historic UAE-Israel deal: All you need to know

  DUBAI – The UAE and Israel have announced a historic agreement that has been hailed as a breakthrough to promote peace in the Middle East.

How did this happen?

On August 13, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to full normalisation of UAE-Israel ties.

What’s important about this deal?

In exchange for establishing diplomatic ties with the UAE, Israel will stop annexation of Palestinian territory. The agreement is known as the Abraham Accord, a historic diplomatic breakthrough that will advance peace in the Middle East region.

What happens next?

Delegations from the UAE and Israel will meet in the coming weeks to sign bilateral agreements regarding investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications, technology, energy, healthcare, culture, the environment, the establishment of reciprocal embassies, and other areas of mutual benefit.

What will Israel focus on now?

As a result of this diplomatic breakthrough, Israel will suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in the President’s Vision for Peace and focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world.

What else is covered by the Vision for Peace?

Under the Vision for Peace, all Muslims who come in peace may visit and pray at the Al Aqsa Mosque, and Jerusalem’s other holy sites should remain open for peaceful worshippers of all faiths.

What’s next for the UAE and Israel after this deal?

The UAE and Israel will immediately expand and accelerate cooperation regarding the treatment of and the development of a vaccine for the coronavirus. Working together, these efforts will help save Muslim, Jewish, and Christian lives throughout the region.
