Hundreds of Indians stranded in UAE after Saudi border closes
DUBAI – Hundreds of Indians were left stranded in the UAE after Saudi Arabia closed its borders due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some 320 Indians, many of whom were transiting through Dubai, were on their way to Saudi Arabia on December 20 when the kingdom announced flight suspensions, according to Dubai-based charity Dubai KMCC. Dubai KMCC has been providing housing and food to the stranded Indians, and has allowed them to stay in their Ajman accommodation for free until January 10. The stranded passengers are also provided three meals per day, an officer of the organisation said. Dubai KMCC Senior Secretary Sajid Aboobacker said the organization received requests from more than 500 people, with 320 Indians housed in the KMCC accommodation in Ajman. Others have been referred to partner hotels offering cheap daily rates. On Monday, Saudi Arabia extended its suspension of international flights as a new strain of coronavirus emerged in the United Kingdom. Saudi Arabia, however, said it would allow expatriates and foreigners to leave the country on outbound fights.
