Indian doctor dies of Covid-19 in Al Ain
DUBAI – An Indian doctor who took care of Covid-19 patients in Al Ain died of coronavirus on Saturday. He was 61. Dr. Sudhir Rambhau Washimkar was cremated and his funeral was held on Sunday (June 7). He is survived by his wife and their two sons. Dr. Washimkar was an internal medicine specialist at Burjeel Royal Hospital in Al Ain where he treated coronavirus patients. He tested positive for the virus on May 9 and was admitted to Burjeel hospital before he was transferred to Al Ain Hospital for further treatment two days later. Healthcare group VPS Healthcare mourned the loss of Dr. Washimkar, who hailed from Nagpur, Maharashtra state in India. "He was one of the most courageous and bravest frontline warriors at the forefront in giving care to the patients since the beginning of the outbreak of the pandemic in the UAE. The staff at Burjeel Royal Hospital and the entire VPS family will miss him," said Dr. Arun Menon, regional director for VPS Healthcare's Al Ain region. VPS Healthcare pledged to finance the education of Dr. Washimkar’s sons of up to Dh300,000 per year until they complete their studies to become doctors. Dr. Washimkar was the first healthcare professional from Burjeel Royal Hospital to die of Covid-19. He was believed to be the second doctor in the UAE to die of Covid-19. Last month, a Pakistani doctor in Abu Dhabi died of Covid-19 after getting infected by a patient he was treating. Dr. Mohammed Usman died after being treated at the hospital for 10 days. Other frontliners have succumbed to coronavirus in the UAE. In April, a Filipino nurse in Sharjah died of Covid-19 after working in the intensive care unit of a hospital in the emirate. Marlon Jimenea, 44, was believed to be the first Filipino frontliner to die of Covid-19 in the UAE. In May, Abu Dhabi-based Filipino nurse Janette Alano also died of coronavirus. In a post on Facebook, the Philippine Nurses Association-UAE described Alano as a hero who had “given her life to something bigger than oneself”. Also in May, a Filipino volunteer who worked with social organisations and the Dubai Police to assist Filipinos in distress died of Covid-19,colleagues confirmed to Expatmedia.net. Melchor Corpuz Mandac, 48, died in the hospital a day after he was admitted and two weeks after experiencing symptoms of Covid-19. Colleagues said Mandac had brushed off his symptoms until they started becoming serious.
