‘I'm sorry that we lost tonight’: Manny Pacquiao after defeat to Yordenis Ugas

  LAS VEGAS – Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao lost to Yordenis Ugas in his return to the ring at the age of 42 on Saturday (Sunday in UAE). The defeat left Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) unsure about his fighting future, as rumours continued to swirl that he will run for Philippine president in 2022. "I will make a final announcement next month. I know that I am facing a big problem that's more difficult than boxing but I want to help the people. I want to help them," he said after losing to Ugas. Ugas was a last-minute replacement after unified champion Errol Spence Jr. withdrew from the fight. The Cuban relied on defense and hard counterpunching to defend his WBA welterweight title. He outlanded Pacquiao by a margin of 101 to 88, according to CompuBox, and landed 59 percentof his power shots en route to a unanimous decision (115-113, 116-112, 116-112). Ugas, 35, turned on the defensive to prevent Pacquiao from landing his combination shots, frustrating the Filipino boxer. In the eighth round, Ugas caught Pacquiao with a right fist. The fight stretched on the Round 12. By the end of the round, Pacquiao had a cut above his left eye and a significant swelling below his right eye. "I'm very excited but most of all, I want to thank Manny Pacquiao for giving me this moment in the ring today," Ugas said. "I told you that I'm the only champion of the WBA. He's a great competitor and I have a lot of respect for him but I won the fight”. "The double jab was the lead punch.
