Philippine policeman in mother-son shooting faces double murder charge

MANILA – A Philippine policeman who shot dead a mother and her son in front of their home in Tarlac is now in police custody and has been charged with double murder. Police Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca, 46, surrendered hours after the brutal daylight shooting on December 20, said Lt. Col. Noriel Rombaoa, Chief of Police of Paniqui, Tarlac. “During interrogation, he told me he regrets what he has done and that he doesn’t know what came over him,” Rombaoa said in Filipino. Nuezca was reportedly drunk when he got into an altercation with the victims, Frank Anthony Rufino Gregorio, 25, and Sonya Rufino Gregorio, 52, after the younger Gregorio reportedly fired an improvised cannon locally known as boga. In a video, the mother can be seen hugging her son in an attempt to stop the fight from turning physical. The mother and son can also be heard having a heated exchange with Nuezca’s daughter who accompanied him. The police officer is then seen drawing his gun and shooting both victims in the head. Police said that the suspect later surrendered at Rosales Police Station in Pangasinan and turned over his police-issued pistol used in the shooting. The firearm has been turned over to the forensics laboratory. In an interview with Raffy Tulfo in Action, the family of the victims said that the Gregorios and Nuezcas, who are neighbours, have not been in good terms after Nuezca bought a piece of land worth P40,000 from the older Gregorio. The woman was reportedly not able to transfer land ownership to Nuezca for nearly a year despite payment. The matter was taken to town officials for amicable settlement and the payment was returned to Nuezca before he could file a court case against the family, according to Paniqui town chairman Rosita Ovejera. Meanwhile, the family of the victims is calling for justice, which has sparked the trending of hashtags #StopTheKillingsPH and #JusticeForSonyaGregorio on social media. On Monday, they were waiting for funeral arrangements for the duo. Sonya is survived by her husband and their six children, while Frank leaves behind a one-year-old child. CAM/Expat Media
