Pink Lake in Ras Al Khaimah: Mystery solved
DUBAI – As visitors flocked to Ras Al Khaimah’s Pink Lake for some stunning photos, an expert has debunked the mystery surrounding the very unusual phenomenon. Dr. Saif Al Ghais, Director General of the Environment Protection and Development Authority, explained that the presence of red algae has caused the water to turn pink. Al Ghais said further analysis and study of samples taken from the site will be needed in order to confirm the cause of the water discolouration. According to experts, the algae growth is typically recorded once a year in areas like Al Rams, and that it is a natural phenomenon and not the result of pollution. The Pink Lake was first spotted by Emirati student Ammar Al Farsi, 19, from Sharjah. He took drone shots of the lake in the Al Rams area of Ras Al Khaimah. His photos went viral on social media and sparked a flurry of visits to the site.
