Policeman in mother-son shooting may have ‘protectors’, says Marcos

  MANILA – The police sergeant who shot dead a mother and her son in Tarlac last Sunday is likely to have “protectors” linked to the Philippine National Police, Senator Maria Josefa Imelda Marcos said. Marcos said that Jonel Montales Nuezca “could even be a regular hitman” and said that the policeman’s immediate superiors must also be included in the investigation. “Sino mga padrino nito? (Who are this guy’s protectors?) The guy is clearly inured to shooting people like target practice, using his service firearm,” she said, adding that the frat system was defeating the police force’s efforts. Records show that Nuezca was involved in two cases of homicide last year, both of which were either dropped or dismissed. He also escaped a case for grave misconduct in 2013 and serious neglect of duty in 2016 for failing to appear as prosecution witness in a drug case. “His immediate superiors must be automatically included in the investigation,” Marcos said, citing a law on the Philippine National Police. The senator said the country’s laws needed to be amended, and pointed out “clear lapses” in psychological and drug tests for police personnel and a periodic review of their behaviour. ICA/Expat Media
