Scientists arrested over climate change protests

Several scientists around the world protested for serious government action on climate change.   Last week, Peter Kalmus, a NASA biological systems and climate change expert, protested and chained himself to a Chase Bank office building in Los Angeles when JPMorgan Chase increased its investment in fossil fuels. The police came in full riot gear and arrested Kalmus and three other protesters. "We've been trying to warn you people for decades that we're on the verge of a major disaster, and we've been ignored," Kalmus remarked. The protest went viral on social media, which caused the people to be alarmed about the severity of the problem. Scientist Rebellion estimates that about 1,000 activists from 25 countries took part in the protests, including both scientists and nonscientists. In London, 25 people glued scientific papers and their own hands to the windows of the Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy Department of the U.K. Aaron Thierry, an ecologist, superglued his hand to the windowpane while begging others to wake up and take action. “The government’s insane, and I don’t know what to do, other than to do this, to try and get the attention that we need to wake the public up,” he said. The protests urged the release of the latest report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The report warns that "it's now or never" for the world to take drastic action to reverse the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. BKM/ Expat Media
