Surge in number of Filipinos in UAE seeking contract verification, OEC in April: POLO Dubai
DUBAI – Filipinos in the UAE have been flocking to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO Dubai) to have their employment contract verified, which is a prerequisite for the issuance of an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC). In a statement to Expatmedia.net on Friday (April 29), POLO Dubai said the recent surge in applications for employment contract verification and OEC issuance was brought about by the “the lifting of the Covid-19 entry requirement in the Philippines and the easing of travel protocols in the UAE”. “A daily average of 700 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), most of whom entered UAE on tourist visa or visit visa or through a third country recruitment, are seeking contract verification and issuance of OEC has been recorded from March to April. Most of them went home during Ramadan because of cheaper air fare compared with the December 2021 to January 2022 rates. Some of those who went home were emergency cases,” POLO Dubai told Expatmedia.net. The OEC, also known as exit clearance or exit pass, is a document certifying the regularity of recruitment and documentation of an OFW and proof of his or her registration with POEA. The OEC is presented to the immigration officer at the airport of exit in the Philippines. A worker exiting from the Philippines without OEC may be prevented by the immigration officer from leaving the country. An OFW who holds and OEC enjoys the following privileges: travel tax exemption, airport terminal fee exemption and reduced travel tax for spouse or dependents. Starting May, the POLO Dubai is consolidating the contract verification and OWWA membership application or renewal as one appointment, with 250 appointment slots allocated per day. For OEC issuance, POLO Dubai will entertain 150 appointments per day. Online appointment will be strictly followed. OFWs can also avail of their OWWA and OEC in the Philippines,” POLO Dubai told Expatmedia.net. POLO Dubai reiterated a POEA advisory for “all workers not to leave the Philippines with a tourist visa or visit visa but to undergo the legal channel and have their documents processed with POEA”.
