‘I thought someone stole it!’ says Dubai resident whose car went 'missing' in parking lot

  DUBAI – A Dubai resident got the scare of her life after her car went “missing” in a public parking lot in the emirate. It turns out it was impounded. The car owner in International City told Expatmedia.net that her car was towed after its registration remained expired for nearly a year. “I didn’t have enough funds to renew the car registration due to the pandemic. But I made sure the car was washed regularly so it wasn’t dirty. One morning, it was missing from its parking spot and I panicked! I thought someone stole it,” said the Dubai resident, who requested anonymity. It turned out the car was towed to the Dubai Police Impound Yard in Warsan 3, just near International City. Hundreds of cars are kept here, waiting for their owners to claim them. One of them was a sports car that was also parked in International City. The owner said that the car’s registration was expired when it was towed to the impound yard. “I kept it clean, and moved it between parking spaces every now and then, but it still got towed away,” the resident told Expatmedia.net. “I’ve noticed there are now more Emirates Auction tow trucks in the community, which means they are clearing the space of abandoned cars,” the resident added. Speaking to Expatmedia.net, an Emirates Auction employee said there are many reasons a car may be towed: traffic violations such as expired registration, criminal cases, or if the car is dirty or in a state of disrepair. Impounded cars in Dubai are kept in the impound yard for verification and claim by the owner. If a vehicle is not recovered by the owner after six months, it will be sold by auction. ICA/Expat Media
