UAE to grant Emirati citizenship to talented people, allows dual citizenship
DUBAI – Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced on Saturday (January 30) changes to the UAE’s laws to allow dual citizenship and to grant Emirati citizenship to “talented” individuals and specialists. Sheikh Mohammed said the UAE will grant citizenship to “investors, specialized talents and professionals, including scientists, doctors, engineers, artists, authors and their families”. ALSO READ: UAE citizenship for expats - All you need to know "The UAE cabinet, local Emiri courts and executive councils will nominate those eligible for the citizenship under clear criteria set for each category. The law allows receivers of the UAE passport to keep their existing citizenship," Sheikh Mohammed added.To receive Emirati citizenship, a resident must be nominated by a federal entity at the UAE Cabinet, each emirate's executive council, their ruler's court or that of their crown princes. Changes to the law will also allow individuals to retain their nationality and adopt dual citizenship. This came after an order from President Sheikh Khalifa to attract and retain talented and specialized individuals to help in the UAE’s development. Naturalised individuals must follow UAE laws and inform their government of changes to their citizenship, according to the UAE Government.
