UAE to resume travel, trade ties with Qatar in a week

  DUBAI – The UAE will resume travel and trade ties with Qatar in a week after the emirates, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt, agreed to fully restore ties with its neighbour following the signing of the Al-Ula Declaration. The Al-Ula Declaration, signed on Tuesday (January 5), ends the Qatar boycott with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and other members of the GCC. The declaration now opens the way for the re-establishment of political and economic ties with Qatar. On Thursday (January 7), UAE State Minister for Foreign Affairs Anwar Mohammed Gargash said that travel, transport, shipping and trade ties with Qatar will resume in a week. “We want to do this sooner rather than later,” Gargash told a virtual media briefing. “The UAE is extremely supportive and positive about Al-Ula Declaration,” he said. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar in 2017, accusing it of supporting terrorism and interfering in the internal affairs of its neighbours. Gargash said the declaration is a first step towards peace and that it “will take confidence-building. But we are turning a page on the crisis and starting on a positive note to build trust”. The UAE official explained that the Al-Ula Declaration affirmed “the solidarity of the Gulf states regarding any direct or indirect interference in their internal affairs, and members agreed that no country’s sovereignty be violated or its security targeted”. “The communique is significant and an important step towards resolving a difficult and painful crisis. The crisis is coming to an end, which also depends on transparency and constructive approach ,” Gargash said. “We hope that the severity of the last crisis will be a deterrent to us so that we do not fall again in another small or large crisis. The agreement should be respected, and we always abide by agreements. Genuinely, we want to restart and put the crisis behind us. Al-Ula Agreement broke the psychological barrier, but we need to work on it,” he said. On January 4, Saudi Arabia announced the re-opening of its airspace and land and sea borders with Qatar. Other members of the GCC are expected to follow suit. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan told reporters that the states were able to find a "resolution to all areas of difference," with Qatar and agreed to a "restoration of all diplomatic ties,".
