Vandals deface Dubai sidewalks with graffiti

Vandals have not spared the sidewalks of Dubai’s Al Muraqqabat, with graffiti defacing public seating spaces in the area. When Expatmedia.net visited on Thursday evening (April 13), graffiti could be seen on sidewalk barriers, as well as on the façade of an abandoned building. Residents say vandalism is becoming rampant in Dubai, and the destructive pastime is mostly perpetrated by groups of teenagers. Culprits often target residential buildings, elevators and public places. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing because Dubai is such a clean city. I feel sad that these vandals are literally tarnishing the city’s image. I hope they can find other creative ways to express themselves,” M.S. (full name withheld), a new Dubai resident, told Expatmedia.net. Authorities have repeatedly warned the public against writing graffiti on walls, adding that violators will face tough penalties. Under the UAE law, a person found guilty of writing graffiti on walls faces a jail term of not less than a year or a fine of not more than Dh10,000 or both. If the offence is committed by a gang of three, the penalty will be five years in jail for each person. Juvenile violators will get a reduced prison term and a fine. ICA/Expat Media
