Warning about poisonous sea snakes in Abu Dhabi beaches
ABU DHABI – Authorities issued a warning to beachgoers in Abu Dhabi to be on alert for poisonous sea snakes as the country prepared for a three-day weekend to mark Prophet Mohammed's birthday. The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAAD) distributed notices to homes in the St. Regis Saadiyat area this week, cautioning residents against handling snakes and to avoid ones that wash up on the shore. The most common sea snakes in the UAE are the Arabian Gulf sea snake, the yellow-bellied sea snake and ornate reef sea snake. Experts say these snakes are non-aggressive and only strike if scared or provoked. Sea snakes are commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical waters of southeast Asia, western Pacific Ocean and northern Australia. There are 70 known species. The bite of a sea snake can be fatal, and bite victims need to get hospital treatment immediately. The venom in the bite can damage the nervous system.
