1,200 people hurt during procession that lasted more than 20 hours

  MANILA - Not even a reported terror threat could stop more than a million Catholic devotees of the Black Nazarene from joining an annual procession of the centuries-old statue around downtown Manila on Monday. This year's procession locally called "traslacion" started from the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park at 5:30 a.m., two and a half hours earlier than the traditional 7 a.m. schedule. After 22 hours and 19 minutes and a trek of seven kilometers, the image's carriage called "andas" arrived at the Quiapo Church, home of the image, at 3 a.m. on Tuesday. The Traslacion is a reenactment of the transfer of the image from Intramuros to the church in 1787. Manila police estimated the number of people who joined the procession at 1.4 million. This year's procession again had its share of injuries as 1,200 people were wounded of injured in the event and had to be given first aid or sent to hospitals for various ailments or injuries, according to records of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Philippine National Red Cross. Because of reported threats to disrupt the religious event, the police imposed a gun ban, banned drones from being used during the activity, backpacks were thoroughly searched and snipers were posted on buildings along the procession route. Telecommunications companies shut down services in the area where the procession passed as requested by the police. The police explained that it was a way to stop the use of cellphone signals to trigger any bomb. The police had warned that Moro militants trying to align themselves with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terror group may try to attack the procession following the killing of an extremist leader last week. Devotees of the Black Nazarene, mostly men, consider the image as miraculous. It was shipped to the Philippines centuries ago from Mexico. During the procession, devotees would ask volunteers on the carriage to wipe towelettes thrown at them on the Black Nazarene. The devotees believe that the towelletes wiped on the image would have mystical powers to cure ailments and give good health.
