DUBAI - Twenty nannies in the UAE are competing to take home one million in their home country's currency in the Best Nanny Award on November 25.
The finalists bested nearly 500 nominees and received the most number of votes from a total of more than 250,000 votes, the organiser said.
The nannies will need to wow judges on four things: ability to build a caring and nurturing environment for the children; instill a healthy eating and nutrition plan; support the child’s learning and development; and understand child safety and emergency handling.
Margie Buenaflor, one of the 20 nannies shortlisted for the award, said she felt excited and nervous at the same time. "More than anything, I am very happy because of what my boss told me, 'You lose or win you are still the best nanny for us'," Buenaflor said.
Joy Gambol, 55, is one contenders for the award organised by start-up company Grow with Rise. Gambol - who has worked in China, Taiwan and Sudan over the past 15 years - said she will consider retiring if she wins the prize.
The "very hardworking and extremely trustworthy" nanny has a fair chance of winning, her employer said.
Juliet Abdul, 32, said her nomination was a big surprise. She thanked her employer for "taking the time" to nominate her.
Grow with Rise co-founder Padmini Gupta said the award is "our way of giving back to the most deserving people".
Gupta said this year's award will be a retirement savings plan equivalent to one million in the winner's currency "to highlight the challenges of savings and retirement for 750,000 maids and nannies in the UAE".
Last year's award saw Filipina, Lorina Bunio, take first prize, besting 200 nannies nominated for the prize. Burnio received a cash prize of Dh5,000.
