10-day leave for UAE private sector workers plus new leaves starting February 2

  DUBAI – Private sector employees in the UAE will be able to avail of six types of paid leaves, including a 10-day leave, starting on February 2, 2022 under a new decree issued by the UAE president. UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a decree on November 15 to regulate labour relations in the private sector. These included several paid leave options that employees in the private sector are entitled to beginning February 2. These are the leaves:

10-day study leave

Private sector workers who have completed two years of work with their employer are entitled to a 10-day study leave per year, provided that they are enrolled in an accredited institution within the UAE.

One day off, with increased weekly rest days

Under the new law, employees in the private sector must be given one day paid off, with the possibility of increasing weekly rest days at the company's discretion.

Mourning leave

Employees can also receive mourning leave that ranges between 3 to 5 days, depending on the degree of kinship of the deceased.

5-day parental leave

Private sector employees are entitled to a parental leave of 5 working days from the day of the birth of their child to six months. Parental leave is a paid leave that can be applied for by both mother and father of the baby.

Extended maternity leave

Maternity leave in the private sector can extend to 60 days, which includes 45 days with full wage, followed by 15 days on half pay. New mothers are eligible to receive additional 45 days without pay leave once they finish their initial maternity leave period in case of any post-partum complications or ailment in the newborn. They will have to provide supportive documents to apply for sick leave.

30-day paid leave for mothers with special needs babies

New mothers of babies with special needs are entitled to a 30-day paid leave after completing their initial maternity leave period, renewable for another 30 days with no pay.
