Are you trying to lose those unwanted pounds? We suggest you take note of 10 foods that can curb your hunger for hours and prevent you from bingeing.
David Katz, founder of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, told Health (www.health.com) that there are certain foods that are bigger than a morsel but filling enough to fight hunger pangs and give a person a feeling of "satiety", defined as "a feeling of lasting fullness."
On the other hand, Barbara Rolls, author of The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet, fiber and protein are what make a person feel full for a long time.
So, here's a list of the 10 most filling food:
Baked tomato
It's described as a "potent hunger tamer" because people who ate them reported feeling fuller and ate less thereafter. Although high in carbohydrates, baked or boiled spuds are rich in fibers, vitamins and other nutrients.
Bean soup
Bean soups contain fiber and resistant starch, which slows the release of sugar into the bloodstream to make that full feeling really stick. The Health article quoted Rolls as saying: "Soups have a high water content, which means they fill your stomach for very few calories."
Eggs
According to Joy Dubost, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: "eggs are one of the few foods that are a complete protein, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids that your body can't make itself. Once digested, those amino acids trigger the release of hormones in your gut that suppress appetite."
Greek yoghurt
Dubost said Greek yoghurt has double the protein and less sugar than regular yogurt. A Nestle Nutrition Institute research showed that "dairy proteins increases satiety, reduces food intake and keeps blood sugar steady."
Apples
Apples have pectin, which slows digestion and gives a feeling of satiety. "Whole apples take a long time to eat for very few calories," said Susan Roberts, a professor of nutrition at Tufts University.
Popcorn
A staple snack whenever one watched a movie at home or in a cinema, popcorn "is a low-energy-density food," according to the Health article. Rolls pointed out that popcorn "takes up more room in your stomach, and seeing a big bowl of it in front of you tricks you into thinking that you're eating more calories and that you'll feel full when you're finished."
Figs
Fresh figs are rich in fiber. Fiber "slows the release of sugar into the blood, preventing so-called "sugar high".
Oatmeal
Like figs, oatmeal has high fiber content. "When cooked with water or skim milk, the oats thicken and take more time to pass through your digestive system, meaning you'll go longer between hunger pangs," Health.com reported.
Wheat berries
Wheat berries are actually whole wheat kernels and they have "one of the highest amounts of protein and fiber per serving of any grain (six grams of protein and six grams of fiber."
Smoothies
Blended drinks makes people feel satiated and eat less at their next meal, as shown by a Penn State University study.
