100-year-old Emirati traditional medicine expert dies
DUBAI – An Emirati expert in traditional medicine who received the Abu Dhabi Award for his service has died at the age of 100. Tributes poured in for Aqeeda Ali Al Muhairi, who served many of his patients for free for more than 80 years. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, led the tributes on Saturday (January 2). Sheikh Mohammed called Al Muhairi a “loyal and honorable son of the UAE, who served his country with distinction for decades”. Al Muhairi learnt traditional medicine from his grandmother when he was 20 years old. At the time when there was limited access to hospitals and healthcare, folk medicine was an important alternative. According to Abu Dhabi Award, Al Muhairi “formed an intimate knowledge of treatments for more than 50 different diseases, and he has cared for thousands patients in that time". Al Muhairi was also “entrusted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan” and “did a great deal to support the discovery and maintenance of the local Falajs”.
