1,000 get Russian Covid-19 vaccine in UAE in final trial phase

  DUBAI – A total of 1,000 volunteers in the UAE have received their second dose of Russia’s Covid-19 vaccine as the clinical trials reached final phase in the emirates, authorities announced on Thursday (March 11). The volunteers will now be monitored for their immune response to the virus for 180 days. The Russian vaccine, Sputnik V, has been tested on healthy adults aged 18 years and above from various nationalities in the UAE. Findings of the UAE trials will be released in April. According to initial results of trials from Russia’s adenovirus-based vaccine, it is 91.6 percent effective against coronavirus, with strong immunogenicity and safety results. "The clinical trials have shown promising results across the globe. This next stage will add important data, further demonstrating the high efficacy of the vaccine and strengthening the UAE’s global efforts in pioneering scientific discovery,” said Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. The UAE’s Ministry of Heath authorized the emergency use of the Russian vaccine in January following positive results from its clinical trial on more than 33,000 volunteers. The vaccine was registered for use in Russia in August 2020, becoming the first registered Covid-19 vaccine out of 165 being developed across the world. ICA/Expat Media
