SHARJAH – A new project to make Sharjah a safe city has put 10,486 active surveillance cameras in Sharjah.
The project was inaugurated on Monday, as Sharjah Police marked its 50th anniversary.
Police have installed the cameras in areas like buildings, residences and hotels and have warned that those who do not cooperate will be penalised.
Sharjah Police is the third police force in the world to implement the advance surveillance system, with police saying that installation is complete.
Brigadair Saif Ziri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-chief of Sharjah Police, said that installation began in 2014.
A second and third phase of the "Sharjah is a safe city" project will cover the east and central regions of the emirate, he said.
