Abu Dhabi Police has fined 105,300 motorists for using mobile phones while driving. The fine for this violation is Dh800 in addition to four black points on their traffic file.
The fines were given out during the first six months of 2022, said Major Mohammed Dahy Al Humiri, director of the Traffic and Patrols directorate at Abu Dhabi Police.
Al Humiri said the drivers were caught talking, texting or taking photos or videos with their mobile phones while driving, calling it a “very big danger to road safety”.
Distracted driving is one of the major causes of serious accidents in the UAE, according to police.
Fitted with advanced cameras and systems, smart police patrols on Abu Dhabi roads can detect drivers who do not wear seatbelts, use mobile phones while driving, speeding and other violations. Drivers will be notified of their traffic violations via SMS.
