107 Dubai prisoners freed from Dh21 million debt

  DUBAI – Prisoners serving time for financial crimes have been given a clean slate after a Dubai Courts campaign helped pay off a total of Dh21 million in debt. The Help Has Come campaign benefitted 107 inmates after generous community members donated cash to help them pay off their debt. A committee was set up to assess the inmates’ financial situations before payments were approved. This was the second scheme by the Dubai Courts to help people jailed due to debts. The first initiative helped pay off the debts of 133 inmates totaling Dh13 million. "It contributes to spreading the culture of donation among all community groups,” said Taresh Eid Al Mansouri, director-general of Dubai Courts.
