DUBAI - Eleven Indian sailors who were stranded for months in ships abandoned by their owners off the Sharjah coast have been sent home.
Indian Consul-General Vipul confirmed that the sailors from four abandoned ships were repatriated on Sunday and Monday.
Vipul said that the coast guard and the Sharjah Port Authority helped repatriate six sailors on Zoya 1 ship this week.
The consul-general said that the ship was abandoned in Sharjah and that the company failed to pay port dues.
Authorities also repatriated five more sailors from three ships that belonged to Fujairah-based Venous Ship Management and Operation LLC.
The company was banned by the Federal Transport Authority for Land and Maritime in March for maltreatment of its seafarers. The company was also blacklisted by the Indian Consulate in July last year for the same reason.
Vipul said the five sailors were "in bad shape" due to limited food and fuel on board the ships and that their salaries were not paid.
The consul-general said that the mission is working with authorities to extend help to more abandoned seafarers.
