Dubai is known for its modern infrastructure and well-regulated lifestyle, but there are some lesser-known rules that could catch residents and visitors by surprise. Here are 11 things that could land you a fine in Dubai:

Placing laundry lines or satellite dishes on your balcony

Hanging laundry or placing satellite dishes that distort the view from your balcony could result in a Dh500 fine, according to Dubai’s Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA). Keep those balconies clean and clutter-free!

Jaywalking

Crossing the road without using designated pedestrian crossings, or ignoring pedestrian traffic lights can cost you Dh400. Dubai Police advises always using crosswalks and paying attention to traffic to avoid accidents and fines.

Barbecuing on your balcony

This fire hazard comes with a hefty Dh2,000 fine if you’re caught grilling on your balcony. Fire safety is a priority in residential areas, so stick to designated BBQ areas.

Chewing gum on Dubai Metro

Chewing gum on the Dubai Metro can lead to a Dh100 fine, as it’s considered part of keeping the carriages clean. Save the gum for later!

Having shisha on your balcony

Like barbecuing, shisha smoking on your balcony is a fire risk. Fines for this offense also reach Dh2,000. It’s best to enjoy shisha in designated lounges.

Taking photos of people in public without permission

Taking photos of others without their consent is a serious offense in Dubai. Fines range from Dh150,000 to Dh500,000, especially if photos are shared publicly. Always ask before you snap!

Having a dirty car

A dirty vehicle could cost you Dh500 or more in Dubai. Regular car washes are a must, especially with the desert environment making cleanliness a challenge.

Washing your car in public

You might think you can save a few dirhams, but you are better off taking your car to the car wash instead of washing it yourself on the streets. Washing your car in public is considered hazardous and a form of littering and will set you back with a minimum fine of Dh100.

Sleeping on the Dubai Metro platform

Feeling tired? Don't sleep on the metro platform or you could face a Dh300 fine. The Road and Traffic Authority (RTA) strictly prohibits sleeping in designated waiting areas.

Putting your feet on the seats

Whether on the metro, bus, or tram, putting your feet on public transport seats can result in a Dh100 fine. Keep your feet on the ground and enjoy the ride!

Parking on the pavement

Parking on sidewalks or pavements can land you a Dh400 fine. It’s part of Dubai’s effort to ensure safety and proper traffic flow, so find an official parking spot. ICA/Expat Media This article also appears in the Expat Media Special Edition Magazine
