12 fined for overcrowding in Abu Dhabi apartments

  ABU DHABI - A dozen tenants and landlords in Abu Dhabi's Al Shahama area have been fined for overcrowding, according to the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City on Monday (October 31). The municipality said that fines were also given to those caught setting up unauthorised partitions and rooftop structures. In Abu Dhabi, the fine for overcrowding in apartments and villas in residential areas ranges from Dh10,000 to Dh100,000. Violators also face eviction. Repeat offenders can be fined up to Dh200,000. Abu Dhabi has launched a campaign against bachelors overcrowding in residential areas. The law only allows up to six bachelors to live together in detached residential villas. The occupants also need to be diplomats, or employees of local and federal government, private institutions or judiciary. The fines were handed out following a recent inspection of Al Shahama, where municipal officials noted a number of unauthorised rooftop structures. Two warnings were also served to the owners of vehicles that were found dirty and abandoned.
