The movies will be shown as part of the annual 'New Filipino Cinema' retrospective

  CALIFORNIA - An annual retrospective on "New Filipino Cinema" in San Francisco will feature 12 Philippine films of different genres that present "a broad look at the social and political life in the Philippines today" on August 17 to September 3. A Philippine Daily Inquirer report said the screenings will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The 12 movies are: *Ma' Rosa (directed by Brillante Mendoza). It is about a small-time drug peddler arrested by corrupt policemen. Jaclyn Jose won the 2016 Cannes best actress accolade for the film. *Hamog (directed by Ralston Jover). The film is about the disenfranchised on the streets of Manila. It won awards at the Moscow and Shanghai festivals. *Sunday Beauty Queen (directed by Baby Ruth Villarama). A documentary on Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong who join an annual pageant "to reclaim their dignity". It won best picture in last year's Metro Manila Film Festival. *Forbidden Memory (directed by Gutierrez Mangansakan II). It is about a little-known massacre in Mindanao that happened in the town of Malisbong in Mindanao during Martial Law in the 1970s. *Seklusyon (directed by Erik Matti.) A horror movie that shows how corruption can cling to even the most repentant persons. *Bliss (directed by Jerrold Tarog.) The film focuses on the "monstrous nature of people in an image-obsessed society." *Lily (directed by Keith Deligero). The movie is about an urban legend in the province of Cebu – a shape-shifting witch – who turns out to be a woman scorned. *Patay Na Si Hesus (Hesus Is Dead). Directed by Victor Villanueva, the movie is about a "wacky" family that takes a road trip to their patriarch's funeral. *Mercury (directed by Jason Paul Laxamana). Set at the foot of Mount Arayat in Pampanga, it is "a touching, offbeat and not-so-veiled commentary on American colonialism." *Apocalypse Child (directed by Mario Cornejo). The film reveals "a people still living with their colonial legacies, stuck riding the waves into the rocky shores of a traumatic past."
