14 Sharjah buildings are fire hazards

DUBAI – A recent Civil Defence inspection of buildings in Sharjah revealed that 14 buildings in the emirate are unsafe for failing to comply with the fire safety law. The names of the buildings and their owners were not made public. The Civil Defence visited 719 commercial and residential buildings from February to June as part of a crackdown on developers and building owners who flout the fire safety law. Colour-coded stickers have been placed on buildings that have been inspected. Red stickers mean the building is unsafe and has not met fire code rules. Red stickers are given to buildings that do not have well-maintained smoke detectors, water sprinkler systems, emergency exits and fire protection equipment. Yellow stickers serves as cautionary warning as all standards are not met. The stickers inform residents that their tower may not be safe and that they should consider relocating to new premises. Tenants on buildings with green stickers can rest easy: their building has met fire safety standards. Out of the hundreds of buildings inspected, 502 buildings received cautionary yellow stickers while 203 building received green stickers. Owners of buildings deemed a fire hazard have been warned to take immediate measures to remedy the problem, according to fire department officials. The Civil Defence has said negligent building owners may also be referred to the Public Prosecution and face hefty penalties.
