Anti-Marcos rallies also held in other key cities of the Philippines

  MANILA - Despite rainy weather brought about by tropical storm Marce, an estimated 15,000 people gathered in front of the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park to protest the secretive burial of deposed strongman Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) or Heroes Cemetery on Friday (November 25). Another anti-Marcos rally will be held on November 30 at the People Power Monument along EDSA . Other protests were held also in key cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao on Friday not only against the clandestine Marcos burial at the Libingan but also against the return of the Marcoses to power. At the state-run University of the Philippines, the famous Oblation Run, was conducted and this year, it was a run in protest against the Marcos burial. The Catholic Church led by Bishop Socrates Villegas, who heads the influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), criticized the Marcos family for using the dead to further their political ambitions or gain sympathy. The protest at the Rizal Park dubbed as Black Friday protest drew a crowd of 15,000 as estimated by the police. The protesters all wore black and were composed of young and old, students and professionals. Political activist Mae Paner, also known as Juana Change, dressed up like Imelda Marcos, and kissed an effigy of the body of the deposed dictator. At the grandstand, rally leader took turns lambasting the Marcoses for the sneaky burial of the late former president at the LMNB even if a motion for reconsideration was going to be filed by anti-Marcos lawyers after the Supreme Court ruled last November 8, by a vote of 9-5, allowing Ferdinand Marcos's interment at the Libingan. The High Court said Marcos was qualified to be buried at the LMNB. The burial of the deposed strongman last November 8 was also met by protests across the Philippines. In Manila, a big protest was held at the People Power Monunent. At the Rizal Park rally, shouts of "Marcos Hitler diktator tuta! (a common cry in anti-Marcos rallies way back in the 70s and 80s) and "Marcos Di Bayani" (Marcos Is No Hero) reverberated among the crowd. "Let's Volt In", the theme song of the Japanese animated feature Voltes V also played in the background. The protest rally at the Rizal Park coincided with the return of President Rodrigo Duterte who fulfilled his promise to the Marcoses to allow the burial of the deposed dictator at the LNMB. Duterte was harshly criticized by the protesters in the rally as well. Meanwhile, the Oblation Run, a yearly activity of a fraternity in UP wherein selected members run naked across the campus, protested the Marcos burial at the LNMB. Anti-Marcos forces gathered in cities like Tuguegarao, Baguio and Angeles in Luzon; Iloilo, Cebu and Bacolod in the Visayas; and Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga in Mindanao.
