15,000 receive Covid-19 test vaccine in UAE

DUBAI – UAE health officials said that 15,000 volunteers have received their first two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine as part of a clinical trial in the UAE. The volunteers will receive their second dose of the inactivated coronavirus vaccine within the next few weeks, said Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention. "This is a very proud day for everyone associated with these trials and we are looking forward to continuing to play an integral role in the work to come in the months ahead," said Al Owais. The first volunteer to receive vaccinations was Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, chairman of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi. More than 15,000 volunteers from 107 nationalities registered for the clinical trial of the inactive vaccine in the country. Among those who registered were 140 doctors and 300 nurses. Those eligible to undergo vaccine testing must have no pre-existing health conditions, including asthma, cardiovascular diseases, kidney disease or malignant tumours. They should not have experienced a fever, dry cough, fatigue or a runny nose for at least 14 days before they took the first vaccine shot. The Covid-19 vaccine was developed by China-based pharmaceutical company Sinopharm. The clinical trials are being conducted in Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in Abu Dhabi and Al Qarain Health Centre in Sharjah. Trials are also expected to begin in Bahrain this week. Volunteers will continue to undergo regular monitoring, with the entire process taking 42 days. ICA/Expat Media
