Dubai Police traffic chief warns motorists against committing offense

DUBAI – Dubai Police have fined a total of 16,099 motorists from January to March for using their mobile phones while driving. This, as Brig. Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the Dubai Police traffic department, warned that motorists who use their mobile phones while driving are at risk of getting into an accident because they are distracted. Dubai Police records showed that a total of 16,393 traffic violations were recorded during the same period last year. The current fine for using a mobile phone while driving is Dh200 and the offender incurs four black points. However, under new traffic rules that will take effect on July 1, motorists who use a phone, applying makeup or eating while driving will be meted a Dh800 fine and given four black points. Meanwhile, the Dubai Police will launch campaigns against texting or calling while driving and will assign more patrols on the road to catch motorists who commit the offense.
