Escalator reverses in full speed causing people to tumble down, pile up at the base

  HONG KONG, China - Eighteen shoppers in a mall in Kowloon, Hong Kong were injured last Saturday, one of them seriously, when the escalator they were riding in suddenly reversed and sped up. A video of the accident showed that 45-meter-long escalator linking the fourth and eighth floors of Langham Place suddenly changed direction at full speed, causing most of the people in it to lose their balance, tumble down and pile up at the base. Some of the shoppers fell over or clung to the handrail to avoid tumbling down. The escalator is one of the longest in Hong Kong. Fourteen women and four men were hurt in the accident. One of those injured, a 47-year-old man, was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is in serious condition while the others were stable. As a result of the accident, the Hong Kong government ordered contractors to conduct tests on 57 escalators in the city that are more than 15 metres in height within a month. The Hong Kong Electrical and Mechanical Services Department said a damaged driving chain or braking device may have caused the elevator to malfunction.
