Mendoza, Diaz among the 774 new members of the Academy that hands out the Oscars

  MANILA - Independent award-winning director Brillante Ma Mendoza and Lav Diaz are now members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which organizes the annual Oscar awards. Diaz and Mendoza are among the 774 new members of the 8,000-member AMPAS. Aside from Diaz and Mendoza, other Asians who are now AMPAS members are Kim Ki-duk, Ann Hui, Takashi Miike, Johnnie To and Tran Anh Hung. Diaz's "Ang Babaeng Humayo (The Woman Who Left)" won the Golden Lion in Venice last year, and Mendoza, who is 2009 Cannes best director for "Kinatay (Slaughtered)", welcomed their inclusion in the Academy in separate interviews by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Diaz said his inclusion in the Academy "sounds cool." "It sounds cool. It is an acknowledgment that Philippine cinema and Southeast Asian filmmaking are finally a part of the Academy's once-exclusive forum," Diaz said. He pointed out that Asia "has long been just an agora for Hollywood, its biggest testing market, in fact, when it comes to assessing trends in the audience's response to its products." "Now, they are opening up—albeit only in terms of the Oscars' voting process," he added. Diaz however lamented the "archaic and unprogressive selection process" involved in choosing the Philippines' entry to the Oscars' best foreign language cateogory. "Every year, we have really strong films that can compete, if we are only talking about competition. Sadly, in our case, we have an archaic and unprogressive selection process. So shameful, naïve and utterly feudal. We have wasted so many opportunities in the past." Diaz said he is not undermining the role of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), which chooses the country's Oscars entry, but stressed the need to "look beyond politics and clique mentality." Diaz suggested creating a "formidable" selection committee composed of members of the academe, critics, film scholars and filmmakers that will choose two or three films to be sent as Philippine entries to the Oscars. "Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan" helmed by Diaz was the Philippine entry to the Oscars in 2015 while Mendoza's "Ma' Rosa" was the country's bet last year. No Filipino film has made it to the nominees for the best foreign language film. Meanwhile, Mendoza said: "I am glad that we now have representation in the Academy In spite of our contrasting aesthetics, Lav and I were invited to join the same group. This can only mean that Hollywood now recognizes Philippine cinema." It's a historic first for the country, Mendoza quipped. "It's a good development, and I hope other Filipino filmmakers will continue our work of making positive contributions to the world of cinema," he added.
