2 jailed over ‘child sex’ texts spotted on US flight

  WASHINGTON – A man who was sending text messages about sexually molesting children is now in jail after a passenger seated behind him on the San Jose-bound flight saw the “very disturbing” messages. A woman who he exchanged text messages with was also jailed, and two children—aged5 and 7—have been identified by authorities as likely potential victims of the duo. Police identified the suspects as Michael Kellar, 56, and Gail Burnworth, 50. During interrogation, Kellar told police the texts were just role playing and sexual fantasy. According to police, Kellar was texting on his large-sized cell phone screen on the flight. He did not realize that the screen was legible to the passenger seated behind him on the two-hour flight. The passenger, a pre-school teacher, then took photos of the conversations on her own mobile phone to preserve evidence, including a message where Kellar requested the other party to perform sex acts on the children. The teacher then alerted the flight crew, who then contacted authorities on the ground. “It was in large font, and she sees certain words and starts contemplating there’s something bigger there,” San Jose sex-crimes Detective Nick Jourdenais told the Mercury News. “Then the conversation transitions to children. That’s the moment when she decided to preserve the evidence as best as she could.” “It’s kind of mind-blowing,” San Jose sex-crimes Detective Nick Jourdenais told the Mercury News. “She gets on a plane, a normal citizen minding her business. A couple of hours later, she’s intervening on quite possibly the most traumatic thing children can go through. This was life-altering for them.” At a news conference, San Jose Police Sgt. Brian Spears said investigators were able to rescue the children before the assault. Burnworth was babysitting the children. “Extremely disturbing,” he said. Capt.
