  DUBAI – The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has shut down two pet shops for failing to renew their license to operate. The two pet shops, Petholics and Pet House, have been the subject also of complaints from customers who bought puppies from them with fatal animal diseases that later died. Notices of closure were posted on the entrance of the two pet shops owned by Mohammed Wasal Khan aka Wasal Omer Khan, who was unavailable for comment on the matter but had previously denied the accusation of the customers and committing any wrongdoing. A shop employee however said the two shops were only closed for renovation and will reopen this month after an exhaust system has been installed despite the notices posted on the entrance explaining the closure. "The trade licences of Petholics and Pet House expired in December 2016. Neither of these stores have had their licences renewed and they remain closed for business," said an official of the DMCC, which is the licensing and regulatory body for the Jumeirah Lakes Towers freezone. Meanwhile, several customers have complained that the two pet shops sold puppies with ailments, one of which was canine distemper, which is an infectious and often fatal animal disease. The puppies have died within a short span of time after purchase. The shops have been fined several times in the past following the complaints. A female complainant alleged that the shops' veterinarians would administer a medication used to control parasites in cattle on animals in the pet shops even if it is improper and illegal to do so because it would kill the animals since they are small.
