2-year licence for new drivers in UAE soon

DUBAI – A two-year driving licence will be issued to new drivers applying for a licence starting on July 1, according to new UAE traffic rules. These driving licences will be subject to a five-year renewal period for expatriates and 10 years for Emiratis. The new rules, however, will not affect existing driving licences. The new traffic rules were issued by Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. Here's a look at new traffic rules:

Patients with certain ailments that affect their fitness to drive will not be issued driving licences. Ailments include epilepsy, and sudden acute bouts of diabetes
Speed limit for vehicles in residential areas is set at 40 km per hour
Traffic departments are authorised to assign designated routes and times for buses.
Motorbikes must be registered and licensed
Quad bikes will only be driven at desert and sand areas
Children aged 10 or above can sit in the front seat
Wearing a seatbelt will be mandatory for passengers starting on July 1
