23 Filipinos duped by fake recruiters repatriated from UAE

DUBAI – Twenty-three Filipinos who arrived in the UAE after being duped by illegal recruiters have been repatriated home, according to the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi. The embassy on Monday (August 26) said the Filipinos flew home on August 22, bringing the number of Filipinos repatriated by the mission to 1,081. The latest group of repatriated Filipinos were recruited into the UAE without going through the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), a government agency assigned to monitor and check recruitment agencies in the Philippines to protect Filipinos seeking employment abroad. “Practically all of them were enticed into going to the UAE by social media posts made by unscrupulous individuals,” according to an embassy statement. The undocumented Filipinos had sought shelter at the Philippine Overseas Labour Office - Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Centre in Abu Dhabi. The embassy said it took an average of two months to get clearance for the repatriates to leave the UAE and complete checks from the police, judicial authorities and immigration authorities. The mission thanked the UAE government for its “assistance in ensuring the repatriation of these distressed Filipinos at the most expeditious way possible”. It also reminded Filipinos seeking employment outside of the Philippines “to undergo processing by POEA”. ICA/Expat Media
