A 24-year-old Nigerian man, Emmanuel Nzeribe Okegbue, has been given a new lease on life after undergoing successful surgery for a rare and life-threatening brain tumor at Aster Hospital Mankhool in Dubai. Emmanuel had been suffering from severe seizures, persistent headaches, and dizziness caused by an intraventricular subarachnoid cyst, a rare fluid-filled sac, along with a malignant tumor in the left lateral ventricle of his brain. Emmanuel, who experienced frequent seizures up to five times a week, was initially treated with medical management that helped stabilize his condition. This allowed for the possibility of surgical intervention, which he eventually opted for after being informed about the procedure and its risks. A team of specialists, led by Dr. Chelladurai Pandian Hariharan, successfully performed the complex six-hour surgery. "This was one of the most challenging cases we’ve encountered due to the location of the tumor and its rarity. We are thrilled with Emmanuel’s recovery and relieved that the surgery was a success," said Dr. Hariharan, the specialist neurosurgeon at Aster Hospital Mankhool who led the team. Emmanuel's condition, which affects less than 1 percent of all brain tumors, required the utmost precision and expertise during the surgery. The procedure involved a craniotomy, which is the removal of part of the skull to access the brain and excise the tumor. Emmanuel was also placed on a ventilator post-surgery to aid in his recovery and had a temporary drain placed in his brain to manage excess fluid. Fortunately, he recovered well with no signs of infection or complications. Expressing his gratitude, Emmanuel said, “I can’t thank Dr. Chelladurai and the medical team enough. The care I received was exceptional, and after years of suffering, I finally feel hopeful again.” Dubai’s reputation as a hub for medical tourism continues to grow, with over 690,000 medical tourists visiting in 2023, including patients like Emmanuel seeking world-class healthcare.
