Philippine president says drugs war will go on, despite criticism

  MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday vowed to continue his war on drugs despite international pressure. "The fight will be unremitting as it will be unrelenting," he said in his second State of the Nation address. "There is a jungle out there, there are beasts out there preying on the innocent, the helpless." The firebrand president said no amount of criticism or international pressure would deter him. He told critics to focus instead on using their influence to educate Filipinos of the dangers of illegal drugs. After delivering his speech at the House of Representatives, Duterte faced protesters gathered outside the building in Quezon City in an unprecedented move. Duterte was heard trying to initiate a peaceful dialogue with the mostly rowdy crowd. On social media, many people praised Duterte for his efforts while accusing protesters of receiving money to join the rally. A year into his term, Duterte continued to enjoy high approval and trust ratings among Filipinos, according to the latest Pulse Asia survey. Results of the survey, conducted from June 24 to 29, showed that Duterte’s approval rating rose to 82 percent in June from a score of 78 percent in March, while his trust rating also rose to 81 percent in June from a score of 76 percent in March.
