  PALANPUR – Members of one family in Khariya village in Banaskantha district were among the fatalities in the monsoon floods that have hit Gujarat state and nearby areas since early this week. The Times of India (TOI) reported that 18 bodies who were all members of the ill-fated family were recovered from the banks of the Banas River this morning but Agence France Presse (AFP) said there were 17 bodies. Among the dead who all came from OBC Thakor community were eight women and an eight-year-old girl. V M Patel, deputy mamlatdar of Kankrej told TOI: "We suspect that they people were swept away after Tuesday midnight." A mamlatdar is the head of revenue administration consisting of an average of 50 or more groups of villages. With the discovery of the bodies, the number of dead from the monsoon floods that have hit Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar has risen to 119. A flood alert had been raised Khariya and 29 other villages in Gujarat after the water level in Banas River rose due to the influx of water from dams in the area following torrential rains. Meanwhile, military personnel and aircraft have been tapped by the Indian government in the rescue and relief operations. Several villages near Dholka were inundated after water was released from the Dharoi Dam. The water from the dam also flooded the Bhavnagar-Ahmedabad highway. According to Ahmedabad collector Avantika Singh Aulakh, at least 3,858 people in 20 villages were taken to safer locations in the district. Villagers of Dabhipura in Dantiwada taluka of Banaskantha have returned to their homes yesterday (Wednesday) but lamented that they "have lost everything" to the floods. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an aerial survey of the devastated areas and pledged financial assistance for the flood victims.
