Etihad, Qantas, Philippine Airlines prohibit Qatar nationals from boarding transit, direct trips to some Gulf states

  DUBAI - In light of a diplomatic dispute between Qatar and five Arab countries, three airlines have prohibited Qataris from boarding transit and direct flights to some Gulf states. Etihad, Qantas and Philippine Airlines have banned Qatar nationals from boarding flights that fly direct or transit through the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain and Egypt, which all have cut relations with Qatar over the latter's support to Iran and terror groups. Qantas is Emirates Airlines codeshare partner. The UAE had ordered a ban on Qatari nationals from entering the country via land, sea and air. Etihad said the rule applies to all airlines, including the Abu Dhabi-based carrier. A spokesman said: "As per the instructions of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities, all travellers holding Qatari passports are currently prohibited from travelling to, or transiting through the UAE. Expatriates residing in Qatar and in possession of a Qatari Residence Visa shall not be eligible for Visa on Arrival in the UAE." The Dubai-based Emirates airline, for its part, said through a spokesperson: "We have been informed by the UAE authorities that Qatari nationals are no longer permitted to land or transit at any UAE airport. Affected passengers are advised to contact their travel agent or local Emirates Call Centre for flight rebooking or cancellation." Qantas said the airline is aware of the ban on Qataris to enter Dubai and the carrier is "working with the relevant authorities to comply with the new entry requirements." The Australian carrier said the ban applies on passengers seeking to board at any transit stop on a Gulf-bound route, citing as example a Qantas flight to Doha via Singapore and Dubai whereby a Qatari national would be unable to board the plane either in Australia or Singapore. However, Qantas also said they "will be offering the small number of impacted customers who have already booked to travel with us, the option to change their itinerary." Meanwhile, Philippine Airlines said it will not carry Qatari nationals to the UAE and Emiratis into Qatar. "While PAL is not a party to the dispute and maintains strong bilateral ties to these countries, it shall observe guidelines issued by the said nations," PAL said in a statement.
